StasherX takes a different path from typical folder-protection tools. It does not encrypt your files, and it does not move them into a vault. A low-level driver sits in the Windows filesystem and intercepts access to the folders you choose.
Explorer, Search, and the command line get nothing back. To the rest of the system, those directories simply are not there. The Hidden attribute in Windows is only a click away from being undone.
Encrypted containers have the opposite problem: they relocate your data into a virtual disk, break the way you already back up and sync, and can take the whole archive with them if the container is damaged. StasherX works one layer deeper. Directory listings, file operations, and even a simple dir in Command Prompt return no hits for a protected path.
Nothing is moved or rewritten. Your files stay on disk exactly as they were: same folder, same names, same timestamps. Backup software and cloud sync keep working as usual, as long as you allow those programs to see the path.
That list of trusted programs is the practical heart of StasherX. You decide which apps may see a hidden folder. A backup tool or a sync client can keep doing its job; everything else, from File Explorer to a random third-party app, sees an empty space.
For any trusted app you can go further and grant read-only access: it may open your files, but it cannot change, delete, or add anything. Turning stealth on or off is instant. There is no encryption to wait for, so a small folder and a folder of several terabytes disappear or reappear the same way.
You can stash from Explorer’s right-click menu, use a hotkey, or have a folder hide itself when you lock the PC. Windows Search, recent-files lists, and ordinary indexes never get a look at the protected content. If a program is not on your list, it does not see the path.
